* FREE JOB POSTING SITE OF THE MONTH
CareerSite is one of the oldest job/resume Web portals, launching in 1996. After significant technology improvements in 1999, they're ranked by many as a top site for usability, and made a splash with employers this year after instituting aggressive pricing packages... including free job postings.

* FREE RESUME SOURCE OF THE MONTH
Well, it's not permanently free, but 6FigureJobs.com, one of the top sites focused on executive-level candidates, is offering a free day of unlimited resume database access. Call 800-605-5154 or 203-656-2300 by August 15.

* INTERNET RECRUITING TOOL OF THE MONTH
Applicant tracking systems have evolved into robust tools. As your candidate pool skyrockets as a result of utilizing Internet sourcing techniques, you need to manage them efficiently. Even the big career portals (Monster, HotJobs, Headhunter) are buying companies in this space and integrating resume management into their sites. The folks at ERExchange.com have put together the report, Applicant Tracking Systems 2000: A Strategic Overview and Comparison. They interviewed lots of corporate HR directors and evaluated 38 applicant tracking and candidate management systems in depth. For details, visit:

* GENERAL RECRUITING TIP OF THE MONTH
As anyone who's taken my seminar knows, I am a big fan of recruiters developing a company e-newsletter for each type of candidate they target. It's the same thing consumer-oriented community web portals do in order to keep in touch with their site visitors, and is vital if you want to maintain top-of-mind awareness with ever-increasing pools of passive candidates. No matter how big your email database is, it's free if you use my methods. I just wrote an article explaining how for Mass High Tech, which will appear in their August 21, 2000 issue. If you don't get MHT in print, view the online version between 8/21-8/27 by clicking the Recruitment special section link at:
http://www.masshightech.com
* INTERNET RECRUITING NICHE OF THE MONTH
If you're desperate enough to be recruiting North of the border, realize that Canada's biggest job board is Workopolis.com, a partnership of two leading (and otherwise competitive) Canadian newspaper publishers. Their 5 million monthly page views, with tens of thousands of jobs and over 160,000 resumes, handily beats Monster Canada (www.monster.ca) and Montreal-based JobShark Corp. (www.jobshark.ca). Report from:

* RECRUITING EVENT OF THE MONTH
"The War for Talent - Winning Strategies" is a recruiting conference from Sept. 27-29 in Washington DC, run by the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Hudson Institute. For details:

* ADVANCED SEARCH STRING OF THE MONTH
Finding IT professionals with specific certifications is tough because they're in high demand. However, many techies now include the logo image for their certifications in their online resume. Here's how to locate them. I picked up this tip from Tiburon Group in a roundabout way via Bret Hollander, another Internet recruiting trainer based in the DC/VA area.
Go to Altavista.com and click on Advanced Search. In the Boolean Query box, type:
(image:mcse OR image:"Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer") AND
(url:resume OR title:resume OR resume)
You can narrow the same results by location. For example, to find MSCEs in Chicago:
(image:mcse OR image:"Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer") AND
(url:resume OR title:resume OR resume) AND Chicago
For Cisco certifications, type:
(image:"Cisco Certified Networking Associate" OR image:CCNA)
For Novell certifications, type:
(image:"Certified Novell Engineer" OR image:CNE)

To learn how to adapt those search strings to other desired candidate
skilltypes or other geographic areas, if you have attended one of our
seminars, go to:

* RECRUITING NEWS OF THE MONTH
Though it's geared to job seekers, the comparative reviews of the top 11 career portals just released by Computer Shopper magazine should be illuminating to recruiters in some respects. Do you even know all of the top 11 sites?

* RECRUITING PARTNERSHIPS OF THE MONTH
Vendors finally realize that, with all the pairing up going on, everyone in the Internet recruiting space is your potential partner AND competitor. Some of the latest big deals: Webhire.com and CareerCentral.com, PeopleSoft.com and SkillsVillage.com, Monster.com and VirtualRelocation.com, CareerPath and MovingCenter. Note how the last two merge relocation resources with jobseekers - logical, eh?
* RECRUITING STATISTIC OF THE MONTH
According to WetFeet.com's Web Recruiting 2000 survey, 94% of students have used corporate web sites during their job searches; 70% found them very helpful when deciding which companies to interview with, and 43% became interested in working for a company because of the company's Web site. They also found MBAs seek different kinds of info than undergrads. (Check out the free executive summary on their web site.) Our take: You can't treat your web site like a marketing frill anymore if you want to succeed in recruiting. For other insights about how to make your web site more effective as a recruiting tool, check out that section of our course, recently enhanced, at:
