Greetings from your Internet Recruiting guru at www.Recruiting-
Online.com, in cooperation with

This free email Newsletter is sent once per month to keep you updated
about recruiting tips and tools available online and elsewhere. If
you no longer wish to receive this information, see bottom for how to
unsubscribe.
* FREE JOB POSTING SITES OF THE MONTH
JobSquare: It's a bulk job posting distribution service, and they
let you peruse their resumes. Quite a bit of both services are free
to new registrants. Register free at:
http://www.jobsquare.com
Collegiate techies: Most colleges make you scroll through a long
laundry list of resumes, without targeted search functionality. At
least some are limited to a particular department, like the
University of Maryland's CompSci majors at:
http://www.cs.umd.edu/users/
But at some schools, targeted search engines make it a breeze to find
the exact skillsets you want, by year. For example:
Texas A&M CompSci: http://www.cs.tamu.edu/Resumes/
* INTERNET RECRUITING TOOLS OF THE MONTH
Disappearing Email puts a time limit on your sent email messages:
they can't be read, printed, saved or copied after the time period
you specify. Use it to limit: how long emailed resumes are stored on
your system, the duration of confidential messages, etc. It works
with Microsoft Outlook 98 and 2000 and is free for individual users.

A recruiter recently asked me for salary metrics for Telecom
engineers. The best free source for this (or any other job title) is
Salary.com. Just select an industry (e.g., Telecommunications) from
the Job Category menu and geographic area from the State/Metro Area
menu. Click the relevant job titles for detailed compensation
reports. If the job titles don't match closely enough, change the
Job Category menu to another industry (e.g., Engineering, in this
example) to find others.

* GENERAL RECRUITING TIP OF THE MONTH
Case examples of useful recruiting tips from various companies, also
applicable to recruiting firms, can be found on the career site
maintained by BusinessWeek and LeadersOnline at:
http://www.businessweek.com/careers/
* INTERNET RECRUITING NICHE OF THE MONTH
Secretaries: Whether you work in high-tech or not, many lower-level
candidates are in demand, too. However, most web resume searches
yield more technical candidates...unless you use the right sources.
One of our favorite free ones is AOL Hometown. For example, if you
want secretaries' resumes in the 508 area code, try searching at
http://hometown.aol.com/cat.adp?cid=22000&l=english using this simple
search string:
secretary resume 508
(Note that AOL does not support Boolean searches, so if you want to
target a wider geography, you must search multiple times,
substituting a new area code in each search.)
For many more such sources, login to our course (see "HOW DO I LEARN
MORE?" below if you lack access) and go to:
http://www.recruiting-online.com/course1/course15a.html
* RECRUITING EVENT OF THE MONTH
The Electronic Recruiters Exchange, one of the best sites for
Internet recruiters, is holding their first ERExpo: Future Directions
in Recruiting on March 8-9, 2001 in San Diego, CA. The trade show,
speakers and sessions look strong. Meet many of their guest web
columnists, gurus of Internet recruiting in their own right, on a
boat cruise on March 7. For details, visit:
http://www.erexchange.com/expo/

* ADVANCED SEARCH STRING OF THE MONTH
You want experienced (i.e., not still in college) Java developers in,
say, Connecticut, but you don't get enough resumes when you merely
search for "Java developers." That's because many such folks call
themselves "engineers" or do "Java programming" or "architecture."
So go to Altavista.com, click on Advanced Search and:
1) paste this in the "Boolean Query" box:
java and (engineer* or develop* or program* or architect*) and (CT
near (203 or 475 or 860 or 959)) and not (url:.edu or submit or reply
or job* or HR or eoe or "human resources")
2) paste this in the "Sort by" box:
url:resume title:resume
Then click "Search." To learn why this works, how to adapt Boolean
search strings to other desired candidate skilltypes or other
geographic areas, login to our course (see "HOW DO I LEARN MORE?"
below if you lack access) and go to:
http://recruiting-online.com/course1/course15a.html
* INNOVATIVE RECRUITING SITE OF THE MONTH
Unicru provides technology to recruit and retain hourly workers, and
operates 12,000 kiosks across the nation that list jobs that pay by
the hour and where candidates can apply online. Their new web site
helps companies screen and attract job candidates: it assesses
applicants, performs background checks and delivers suggested
interview questions to the manager within 10 minutes. If successful,
the site could serve a huge market. According to the non-profit
research firm, the Employment Policy Foundation, the U.S. has 67.6
million hourly workers.

* RECRUITING NEWS OF THE MONTH
EarthWeb has been refocusing itself towards online IT recruiting and
certification preparation services for IT professionals. Completing
the transition, Earthweb sold its 14 non-career related IT sites,
including Developer.com and HTMLGoodies, on Dec. 26 to Internet.com,
but retained Dice.com and MeasureUp.com, its recruiting and
training/certification preparation sites.

* RECRUITING STATISTIC OF THE MONTH
According to Building Bridges Across Generations: The New Workplace
Culture, from now to 2006, the worker population aged 45-54 will rise
by over 50%, while 25-34 workers will decline by 9%. Is anybody
thinking what this means for the recruiting industry?
